Neran embroidery is practiced by the Marwada Harijan, Sodha, and Jadeja communities of the Kutch region of Gujarat. Centered around a single, compelling motif that gives the style its name, "neran" is derived from the Kutchi word for "eye" or "eyebrow." The core building block of the design is a tiny, diamond-shaped unit representing the eye, which is outlined in a bold black thread, filled with a bright color, and highlighted with a precise white accent stitch. This geometric unit is surrounded by colorful, curved buttonhole stitches—locally called jat—that beautifully symbolize the eyebrow. Traditionally a small component used to balance the heavier pakko style, craftswomen recognized its independent potential, evolving it into a distinct art form. They intentionally offset the dense, structured rows of buttonhole stitches by using mirrors sparingly and focusing the work on smaller surface areas. In doing so, they demonstrate that embroidery is not just about skill but also about an aesthetic sensibility and that they possess both in good measure. Measuring 8.5″ x 8″, it's a compact yet striking accessory. Dry clean only to preserve the intricate handiwork and vibrant colors.
