Neran embroidery is practiced by the pastoral Sodha and Jadeja communities of the Kutch region of Gujarat. True to its name—"neran," meaning "eyebrow"—this style is celebrated for its distinctive, architectural geometry and heavy, graphic presence. Craftswomen achieve this unique texture by mapping out a strict grid of small squares before sketching curved, eyebrow-like buttonhole loops that give the style its signature look. The shapes are then intensely packed using a combination of dense buttonhole filling and tight chain stitch outlines, forming an exquisitely textured, dimensional surface that is remarkably robust. To temper the structural weight and sharp angles of the geometric layouts, craftswomen strategically nestle tiny, circular mirrors (abhla) within the framing of each square motif, bringing an element of shifting light and balance across the fabric. In doing so, they demonstrate that embroidery is not just about technique but also about an intuitive understanding of scale and symmetry—and that they possess both in exceptional measure.
